Your next Computer Class Series Begins the week of August 19th

On behalf of our entire team we hope you have enjoyed a healthy, fun filled summer break and are now ready to get back to playing with your computers and learning about all this changing technology.....

We have a wonderful new ten (10) week series planned based on topics you and fellow classmates have asked us to cover.  If you haven't registered to attend a class or two, be sure to contact the Southern Artery Office as soon as possible...

Our goal is to help everyone get comfortable with your computers and other portable devices – For some students, who are just getting comfortable with the computers and technology our morning program may be just what you are looking for - we offer three levels:

• Beginners: We will help you understand computer basics, laptops, etc & begin using the Internet
• Intermediate 1: Spend the entire series playing with the Internet & email
• Intermediate 2: Learn the basics of using Word for word processing and Excel for creating spreadsheets

For those students, who have been taking classes for a while and are comfortable with the basics, then our afternoon series is what you might be interested in.  Our goal for our afternoon students this series, is to help increase your understanding of the computer filing system using Windows Explorer, Flash Drives & Memory Cards and using Cloud Computing with SkyDrive, Google Drive, Syncing your emails, calendar and contact list to all your devices; We will spend lots of time on the ever changing world of the Internet – terminology, shopping safely, video websites and the last few weeks our goal is to get everyone comfortable with music on your computer and other devices...

Our new computer class series begins this week

Summer is winding down and it’s time to begin our next 10 week computer class series this week beginning tomorrow, August 20^th at Southern Artery..  

If you haven’t registered already but want to join us, come to class this week and then stop by the office to register..  Taking these classes will help to ensure you don’t need instructions from someone like this little fellow….......................................................
so consider joining us with a friend so that you have someone to motivate you to use your new skills and if you have ideas or suggestions for topics that you would like to see us teaching – be sure to let us know… 

These are your classes and we want to be sure you are learning the skills important to you…And as always we welcome your comments and suggestions about what it is you want to learn during these classes, not only about application software – such as Word, Excel, Picasa and others, but all of this technology that is changing continually

During this new series, Afternoon students, will continue to focus on Word Skills in Word Email & Power Point: We will spend the first few weeks with Word Tables to create and edit a personal medial information form; then we'll review some of the new features offered by email services, work with organizing photos on our computers and flash drives; learn more about new features offered by Picasa for photo editing – including easily uploading Picasa photos to Walgreen’s & Facebook; and finish out the series spending several weeks creating slide show presentations using the application software program: Microsoft Power Point... attached…

Remember, all afternoon students, who have completed the morning Beginner & Internet classes, are welcome to sign up (and pay) for a 2nd class, in the morning such as the combined Word/Excel class, or to refresh their skills on computer and internet basics... Requests for the 2nd class will be granted/honored on a first come first serve basis and students coming up from the Morning Internet Class have priority on the Word/Excel Class openings..

Series #50 (May 9th thru July 27th, 2011) some of the topics our Afternoon Classes will be reviewing so that we can create a "coffee table book" with our text, text & photos or just digital photos and we will also be spending a few weeks exploring the internet and all that's new including Facebook & Twiter and some great new websites...

• Reviewing lots of Word Basics including the how to's of copy & paste and saving documents to our computer files & flash drives
• Scanning & editing photos and information to save for use in our books
• We'll discuss the difference between Walgreens & Blurb's Booksmart so you can decide which works best for you to create your book
• We will then create a book, which many of us are finding a great inexpensive option to having photos developed & putting them in photo books...
• We will learn how easy it is to share photo's online with family & friends
• And spend some time on the Internet, learning a little more about Social Networking: Blogging, Twitter & Facebook and some great new fun websites...

Our afternoon class topics vary every series and each and every students input on what they want to learn is a critical part of how the topics for every series are chosen..

No computer classes will be held today Monday, October 11th at Southern Artery in Quincy due to Columbus Day Holiday; We will see you all next Monday, October 18th…

Remember - registration for the next series (which begins the week of November 1st) will be held this Wednesday morning, October 13th - 9am at the Main Office in the north Building....

A few Trivia Facts and/or myths about the voyage of Christopher Columbus:

• Most likely the biggest myth of all is that Columbus set out to prove the Earth wasn't flat. Actually it was a well accepted fact in the later 15th Century that the Earth was a sphere, the only unknown was just how big a sphere it was. Columbus believed that it was a small sphere that if sailed west he would reach the Indies in the shortest time (his calculations underestimated the size by one-fourth). It was actually the Portuguese who won the race to the Indies by having sailed east around Africa in 1499
• While it is true that Columbus sought funding from Queen Isabella (who actually never sold her crown jewels to finance the trip), it is King Ferdinand of Spain who rightfully claimed credit for brokering the deal. Half of the financing of the 1st voyage was from a private Italian investor.
• Columbus is widely thought to be Italian (Genoese), however his actual origins are much a mystery. There is very little known about him prior to 1470; it seems many counties from France to Portugal and even Spain wish to claim him as a native son.
• The maiden voyage included the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina - weather was idyllic for sailing and the 90 men were well supplied and no man died. However on the voyage home the Santa Maria was shipwrecked during a hurricane on Christmas day in 1492 - 39 men volunteered to stay behind on the northern coast of present day Haiti - all believed died at the hands native Indians).
• Columbus changed course on his voyage to follow a large flock of migrating birds and in doing so sighted bonfires which were lit on the beaches of San Salvador to keep fleas out of native huts and the New World was discovered.
• Christopher Columbus died in 1506 still believing he discovered India.
• The term 'Indians' in reference to American Natives is due to Columbus's belief that he landed in India.
• No known portrait was painted of Columbus in his lifetime, 71 originals were exhibited at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893
• Columbus died penniless and jailed. Actually, he died at the age of 55 at his home in Valladoild, Spain a relatively rich man having amassed a wealth of gold found in Hispaniola. In 1500 after his third voyage back to Spain he returned in chains but shortly won his freedom back but not all his privileges promised by the Spanish crown.
• All told seventeen ships and over 1,200 men made up the 2nd voyage in 1493. The first women sailed at a ratio of 1-to-10 on the third voyage in 1498
• Columbus Day was "created" by the retail industry to increase sales - Absolutely not true - Yes it is an adopted holiday celebrated with a day off, but Columbus Day is celebrated around the world. The first U.S. recorded celebration was in New York on October 12th, 1792 in celebration of Italian-American heritage. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937 proclaimed October 12th to be Columbus Day a national holiday. In 1971 the holiday celebration date was changed the 2nd Monday in October. Now due to the politically correct movement some have come to call the formally known Columbus Day as "Discovery Day."

This Friday September 17th 1pm-2:30pm, there will be a special Computer Q & A Session held for all Computer Students, guests and residents of Southern Artery.

Computer Classes Begin Monday August 16th

We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer break... weather certainly has been wonderful - although a little hotter and more humid than some might like...

Our next 10 week Computer Class Series, which is #47, begins next week, August 16th at Southern Artery and will run thru the end of October:

Morning classes will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 9am-10:30am and 10:30am-12N and there are three (3) levels

• Beginner covering basics of hardware, software, keyboard, mouse and the desktop
• Intermediate 1, which covers the Internet - Surfing the web & Using Email
• Intermediate 2, which covers Word and basic word processing skills, writing letters etc

Our Advanced Afternoon classes are held on Monday & Tuesday at 1pm-2:30pm and on Wednesday and Thursday, 1pm-2:30pm and 2:30pm-4pm - all afternoon classes are considered ADVANCED and we cover the same topics (so if you can't make class one day-come to another class. The afternoon classes continue to build on all the basic skills you learned in the morning and we also cover changing technology..

This series we will be focusing on the top requests you made in our recent survey, including:

• Finding and Organizing whats on your computer, using Windows Explorer
• How to add, delete & clean up your files & folders
• How to copy & paste, click 'n drag, drag 'n drop..
• How to save items and copy items to and from your flash drives
• How to use SKYPE to make free calls & video calls
• Using the Internet to shop, bank & travel arrangements on line - lots of security tips and recommendations for registering on websites safely
• Changes in hotmail - which are numerous...
• And much more...

REGISTRATION FOR NEXT SERIES-TUESDAY AUGUST 3RD

Just a quick reminder that registration for the next series at Southern Artery - Series #47 -will be held bright & early on Tuesday morning - August 3rd... so mark your calendar and pass the word...

Series #47, is ten (10) weeks and begins the week of August 16th and continues thru the end of October. During this series no classes will be held on Labor Day, Monday, September 6th or Columbus Day, Monday, October 11th..

Our Morning Classes are Monday thru Wednesday 9am and 10:30am

• BEGINNER: Covers the basics of hardware, 4 different types of software (operating system, application, browser and drivers), keyboard and mouse skills – when to left & right click and much more...
• INTERMEDIATE 1: Covers the basics of the Internet, including the parts of a web address, how to surf the Internet, hyperlinks, using email and the parts of an email address, working with email attachments and much more
• INTERMEDIATE 2: Covers the basics of Word Processing using Microsoft Word – setting up a document, margins, font styles and sizes, inserting photos, clip art and word art, highlighting, copy and pasting and much more

Our Afternoon Classes are Monday thru Thursday, 1pm and 2:30pm

• ADVANCED: Every series our focus changes, but all afternoon classes use all of the basic skills that you have learned in our morning classes and we build on those and also introduce many of the new programs and technologies available...

The next Series #47 (Aug-Oct 2010) some of the topics our Afternoon Classes will be reviewing will be:

• Windows Explorer to quickly and easily find and organize what is on our computers and how to copy data, photos, music from the computer and/or digital camera to your flash/memory stick
• Skype - how to make calls and video calls to anywhere in the world for free
• Google application and features - many new ones
• New advanced features of hotmail and much more

Our afternoon class topics vary every series and students input on what they want to learn is a critical part of how each series is established..

Topics we've worked on: digital cameras and photos, including scanning and editing photos and photo projects such as creating and publishing books, making slide shows or movies, working with music including downloading from iTunes, creating CD’s, other special projects using word processing skills, such as creating iron-on transfers, note cards, invitations, mailing lists, mail merges for holiday mailings, excel list management, power point slide shows, using Picasa Photo Editing and Windows Movie Maker and much much more…

This next series, #46, will begin the week of May 10th and continue thru the end of July - however no classes will be held:

• Monday, May 31st for Memorial Day


• Monday-Friday, July 5th - 9th for July vacation

The next series will be 11 weeks vs. 10 weeks... And we totally understand and expct that there will be classes you will miss for summer activities and that's fine

Morning classes offer three level of classes - Beginner, Intermediate 1 which focuses on the Internet and Email and Intermediate 2 which focuses on Word.

Afternoon classes are open to anyone who has completed the morning series and the topic vary every series. This summer will work on a special project, using your windows explorer organizing skills along with your word processing and photo skills... You will write, create and publish your own book using free BOOKSMART software from Blurb.com (check it out) You will decide what type of book - maybe from a favorite vacation, a book of poetry or recipes, or your life story to share with your family... once the project is done - you can decide to order the book or just enjoy what you've learned and order nothing.. the choice is yours... so no expense is involved at all..

This is an entirely new topic and we encourage everyone to join us..

So be sure to regixter and bring a friend - and as always we welcome your suggestions for topics for future classes...

Registration was held last Tuesday morning, February 9th for the next series #45 at Southern Artery, which begins a week from today on Monday February 22nd and continues thru May 6th... MORNING CLASSES are held Monday thru Wednesday at 9am-10:30am and 10:30am-12N

Beginner – Revision of the current program with emphasis on the introduction of computer equipment & software (Application & Operating system), Basic Computer Terminology and Mavis Beacon Typing – intro to basic games for helping to familiarize students with the use of the mouse and keyboard

Intermediate 1 – Introduces the Internet & Email – learning how to get on line, search on the internet, using internet favorites, and beginning to use email – setting up an account, sending & receiving emails, add& edit contact lists and much more,

Intermediate 2 –Introduces word processing skills, using MICROSOFT WORD: copying/pasting; title bar, menu bar, toolbars, task bar & multi tasking font styles & sizes, using bold, italic & underline, adding color & clip art to documents; setting margins and other basic word skills.

AFTERNOON CLASSES will be held during winter hours Monday & Tuesday at 12:30pm-2pm and Wednesday and Thursday at 12:30pm-2pm and 2:pm-3:30pm (winter hours) until April 1st...

Advanced classes – Students enrolled in the afternoon class have to complete the morning series - Each new afternoon advanced series has a different focus and the topics are based on student requests... The new Series #45 Feb thru May will focus on "Getting Back to Basics" reviewing Hardware, Software, Internet Tips and Searching, Email reminders and also focusing on Music, Photos & Movies - using Windows Media Player and Picasa and creating CD's with both music and movies... and much more…

November 1st already - WOW!!!!
On behalf of myself, Bob, Jean and Jack we all want to welcome you back this week to our new Series at Southern Artery which will continue into February 2010. Imagine, we're in our 44th series already...

Afternoon students remember classes are on winter hours 12:30-2pm and 2pm-3:30pm so those who are driving can always get home before it's too dark or too cold...(times for morning classes don't change)

We hope everyone enjoys all the wonderful things we have planned this series. Be sure to practice what you learn in class, whether at home or back in the computer lab when classes aren't in session. The more you practice, the easier all this becomes, for all of us.. Remember to ask questions - that's helps us to learn from each other...
